- Tooled:
- Leather tooling is the art of
carving three-dimensional images on leather.

|
- Filigreed:
- A filigreed belt is comprised of
four layers of leather. The top layer is the hand-tooled
portion. After the top is tooled, a scalpel is used to remove
all the background from the tooling. This is the time-consuming
part of the project and there is no room for error at this
stage. Once the scapula work is done, the belt is dyed. Lizard (Howard's
favorite exotic), snake, frog, or alligator is added to replace
the background that was removed with the scalpel. Then Howard
adds a layer of leather that he cuts by hand to a perfect domed
shape. Once that is done, the layer of leather is applied that
becomes the back. Howard takes great pride in carefully hand
scrolling a delicate pattern of flowing flowers and vines on the
back of each belt.
